Catching a flight from KEF

Most international departures from Keflavík leave between 06:00 and 09:00, which means a lot of our work involves picking people up at Reykjavík hotels in the dark. Booking confirms by SMS, and on the morning of the flight the driver sends a short message about ten minutes before pickup. The car waits outside.

From downtown 101 to KEF it's 45 to 55 minutes in normal conditions. From Hafnarfjörður or Kópavogur, slightly less. As a rule of thumb we leave about two hours and fifteen minutes before a Schengen departure, and roughly three hours before a long-haul one to the US, the UK or Asia. In winter we add fifteen to thirty minutes for road conditions.

Hotel pickups

Pickup happens at any hotel, apartment or private address in the capital region. The names that come up most often are Hotel Borg, Reykjavík Marina, Center Hotels, Sand Hotel, ION City and Kex in 101; Hilton Reykjavík Nordica and Grand Hotel Reykjavík in Hlíðar; Storm Hotel and the university residences in Vesturbær; the larger places near Smáralind in Kópavogur; and the smaller harbour B&Bs in Hafnarfjörður.

If you give us the hotel name we'll find the right entrance — many Reykjavík hotels have a courtyard or a side door that the taxis use rather than the main street.

Early-morning pickups

The 04:00 and 05:00 slots are the most stressful ones for travellers — and for us. For these times we assign a specific driver the evening before, the car gets inspected, and the route is checked for closures. Standby starts an hour ahead of the pickup. The on-time record over thousands of these transfers is 100%; we keep it that way by treating each one as an event, not as a generic dispatch.
